Ammonia Inhalants

Ammonia inhalants are also commonly referred to as ammonia salts, ammonia smelling salts, or simply as smelling salts. Ammonia smelling salts are intended for waking individuals experiencing benign losses of consciousness, caused by things like hunger, lack of sleep, stifling heat, excessive exercise and more.

Typically comprised of ammonium carbonate and a perfume, most modern ammonia smelling salts are simply a mixture of ammonia, water, and alcohol. They work by releasing ammonia gas into the nose and the lungs, which causes irritation of your nasal and lung membranes. This irritation causes you to inhale involuntarily and triggers respiration, which makes you breathe faster and allows for greater oxygen flow to the brain.
